How to avoid Black Friday scams and stay safe shopping for the holidays

Marianne Bailey September 19, 2021

When did Black Friday start?

The custom “Black Friday” shopping goes back clear to 1951 and was created for businesses to get their yearly numbers “in the black”. This means showing a profit.

You used to get up at the crack of dawn on Friday, after Thanksgiving, and head out with family and friends to get the best deals in town. Most of these deals were for Christmas gifts. “Shop till you Drop” definitely had it’s place in Black Friday.

This year, however, Black Friday has a different look. 2020 has had it’s share of challenges and continues to do so even in November, as we approach Thanksgiving. Black Friday sales have already started (some as early as a few weeks ago) and due to COVID-19 still existing, many shoppers will find themselves shopping online for the holidays.
